The study combines the ability to manufacture high-surface-area, high-strength, all-PVDF or PVDF-based nonwovens with recently developed methods capable of decorating the surface of PVDF fibers with macromolecules or thin conformal films, each adding a specific functionality. The functionalization approaches will be used to demonstrate high-performance multifunctional filters.

This research program concentrates on water collection from the atmosphere by means of superhydrophobic/hydrophilic patterns. The patterns will be optimized for maximum water vapor condensation rates. In addition, we will synthesize uniform coatings with varying degree of repellency and self-cleaning ability to examine the effect of surface micro/nanotexture on condensation rates.
