The metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) group at University of Louisville (UofL), previously at University of Alabama, has been conducting research for fundamental understanding of metal AM technologies as well as toward industrial applications since 2011. To date, the group has been actively involved in different metal AM processes, including Powder-bed Electron Beam AM (PB-EBAM), Selective Laser Melting (SLM) as well as Wire-feed Electron Beam AM (WF-EBAM). UofL’s metal AM group has developed and implemented both numerical and experimental methodologies to investigate various subjects in metal AM and established expertise in several thrusts such as Feedstock analysis, Process physics modeling, Process sensing and metrology, Metal AM part characterizations, and Support structure designs, etc., critical to further advancing metal AM technologies.
In this seminar, after a brief overview of metal AM technologies, the research methodologies and technical findings from different projects will be presented. In particular, for PB-EBAM, three research topics will be discussed: (a1) Thermal modeling for temperature and melt pool predictions, (a2) Nearinfrared thermography for process temperature measurements, and (a3) Contact-free support designs for overhang warping reductions. The ongoing projects focused on SLM will be highlighted too, including (b1) Powder thermal property analysis, (b2) Porosity measurements and analysis of SLM parts, and (b3) Particle-level thermo-fluid process modeling and simulations.
Kevin Chou is currently the Edward R. Clark Chair of Advanced Manufacturing at University of Louisville (UofL). Prior to joining UofL, Dr. Chou was a Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the University of Alabama. Dr. Chou received his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University, followed by a post-doc training in advanced machining at National Institute Standards and Technology (NIST). Among his broad experience, Dr. Chou has been a Faculty Fellow at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, a Visiting Professor at National Chung Cheng University, a Guest Researcher at NIST, and most recently (2014-2015), the Assistant Director for Technology in the Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office (AMNPO) of U.S. Department of Commerce, supporting the newly established Manufacturing USA program (formerly the National Network for Manufacturing Innovations). Dr. Chou’s recent research has been focused on advanced manufacturing including nano-diamond coatings, composite machining and additive manufacturing sponsored by several federal agencies as well as different private companies. A recipient of the 2016 Dick Aubin Distinguished Paper Award from SME’s Rapid Technologies & Additive Manufacturing Community, Dr. Chou’s group has published over 150 refereed articles and made about 100 technical presentations, plus over 40 invited seminars. Dr. Chou is a Fellow of ASME and currently serves as the Chair of ASME’s Manufacturing Engineering Division. He also served as an Adviser for the Additive Manufacturing Certificate Program from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) from 2013 – 2016. In addition, Dr. Chou currently serves as an Associate Editor for both ASME’s Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering and SME’s Journal of Manufacturing Processes. Kevin Chou is also a registered Professional Engineer in Alabama.
