Reliability is the ability that a component, system, or process performs its intended function. It is a major driving factor of product performance and life cycle cost. Reliability is usually measured as the probability of success. There are two aspects with respect to reliability, including reliability analysis and reliability-based design. The former is concerned with how to predict reliability during the design stage for a given design while the later identifies the optimal design that minimizes a cost while maintaining the reliability at a required level. This presentation focuses on the basics of reliability analysis and reliability-based design, as well as recent advances, especially the development of new time-dependent reliability methodologies, which answer the following question: What is the likelihood that a product can still work without failure after it has been put into operation for a period of time? Examples are also given, including those in structural, aerospace, alternative energy, automotive, and traffic accident reconstruction applications.
Dr. Xiaoping Du is Professor at Missouri University of Science and Technology. As an engineer, researcher, and educator in engineering design, he has been involved in many projects in optimization, structural reliability, and reliability engineering. As PI, he received seven grants from NSF and also served as PI and Co-PI for many other research projects. He has published over 100 journal and conference papers. He is currently serving as Associate Editor of ASME Journal of Mechanical Design, Review Editor of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization, and Associate Editor of IISE Transactions. He is Fellow of ASME and a recipient of Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education. He also holds the title of Curator’s Distinguished Teaching Professor, the highest and most prestigious academic rank in the University of Missouri system.
