Jon Komperda receives UIC Teaching Recognition Program Award

Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies Jonathan Komperda has been named a recipient of UIC’s 2025-2026 Teaching Recognition Program (TRP) Award.

The Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs award is given to faculty members who have demonstrated teaching excellence over the past three academic years.

“The award serves as a feedback mechanism, letting me know that what I’m doing is effective and should be continued and further improved. This was not my first time up for the award, as it is very difficult to attain; however, the feedback is also extremely useful and guides you to get better,” said Komperda.

As a UIC graduate, Komperda wants students to have the same, or better, opportunities and outcomes that he did at UIC and in life.

“I enjoy interacting with students and sharing their accomplishments. Their wins are my wins,” he said. “I want students to know that our Top 10 ranking in social mobility is no joke. I keep in touch with many of our students, and this department continues to change people’s lives in ways that they could have never imagined. However, we will continue to do better! Perhaps soon, we will be ranked 6 or 7 nationally in social mobility.”

Komperda’s dedication and service to students and the department have earned him numerous awards during his tenure. Additional awards include:

  • The Harold A. Simon Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2025.
  • The Silver Circle Award for Teaching Excellence in 2023 and 2018.
  • The Teaching Sustainability Initiative (TSI) Fellow, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services, in 2022.
  • The Teaching Award in 2021 and 2017.
  • The Advising Award in 2021.
  • The Honors College Fellow from 2020-2025
  • The Campus Champion, Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment from 2018 to 2021.
  • The Teaching Scholar, UIC Center for the Advancement of Teaching-Learning Communities in 2016.
