Industrial Engineering, BS ’21 | Chicago Heights, IL

Name one thing you think UIC does better than anywhere else: UIC brings people of different backgrounds together.

Most challenging engineering project/assignment you’ve conquered so far: Setting up Arduino hardware/code to calculate the velocities of toy cars going down a ramp at a given height.

Student/campus organizations you’ve joined: UIC Radio, Latin American Recruitment and Educational Services (LARES) Leaders, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers

Place you’re most likely to be found on campus, and why: SEL or Student Center East, simply because there are many different areas to study and do homework.

Industrial Engineering, BS ’20 | Elgin, IL

Favorite thing about the department you’re majoring in: I really love all the professors in the MIE department. They all seem to take interest in their students and make sure they learn the material instead of memorizing it.

Student organizations you’ve joined: Asian American Students in Alliance (public relations officer), EVO Dance Troupe (co-coordinator), American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics (Design, Build, Fly design team captain), Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers, Women in Science and Engineering, Society of Women Engineers, Alpha Phi Omega

Engineering-industry person you admire most and why: Lillian Gilbreth, because she was the first woman to get a PhD in industrial engineering and the first woman elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

Place you’re most likely to be found on campus, and why: The Asian American Resource and Cultural Center because it’s a home away from home, and it’s nice to connect with people who share a similar background as me.

Mechanical Engineering, BS ’20 | Wheaton, IL

Why did you choose UIC College of Engineering? I was a mechanic throughout most of my teenage years and developed a love for all things mechanical. I have always had a desire to create, innovate, and lead. The UIC College of Engineering has offered me those opportunities and helped me to distinguish myself as a student and a leader.

Engineering project/assignment you did that you’re most proud of: My favorite project so far was my slingshot launcher that I developed alongside my team mates in ME 250 (Intro to Engineering Design and Graphics). We all got to explore the engineering workflow and develop every aspect of the design on our own, as if we were in the workforce. It was a challenging and humbling experience.

Student organizations you’ve joined: Competitive Gaming Club, the second largest club on campus with 700+ members (president), Pi Tau SigmaTau Sigma

Internships you’ve held: Product validation engineer at Navistar.

Denisse Manzanilla Reyna

Denisse

Mechanical Engineering, BS ’20 | Mexico City

Engineering project/assignment you did that you’re most proud of: Project STELLA, our robot from Engineering Design Team that earned second place in a competition.

Student organizations you’ve joined: Service Leaders, Engineering Design Team, Society of Women Engineers, and American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Favorite course: ME 205 (Intro to Thermodynamics)

How is the College of Engineering preparing you for the working world? With courses such as ME 347 (Intro to Computer-Aided Design) and Senior Design, we get true insight into the real world of engineering. Extracurricular activities are the cherry on top, where we can put our skills into practice and see them come to life.

Mechanical Engineering, BS ’20 | Skokie, IL

Favorite thing about the department you’re majoring in: The ME 250 (Intro to Engineering Design and Graphics) lab, with its access to 3D printing, project work space, a computer lab, and a wood shop.

What is the most valuable student organization you’ve joined, and why? Engineering World Health was my first real-world application at UIC where I felt like I was making a difference in the world. I met some of the nicest and most driven people in engineering.

Place you’re most likely to be found on campus, and why: SEL, because it’s my second engineering home. I work there as an undergraduate TA. Many of my classes are there, and it has comfy lounge areas and lab space to experiment.

What do you hope to be doing right after graduation? I hope either to get a master’s degree in energy engineering or begin working for an engineering company.
