Revolutionizing Graduate Engineering Education

Monica Cox, PhD.
Department of Engineering Education, The Ohio State University

Abstract: Over the past ten years, engineering education has emerged as a field of study where students can earn graduate degrees and teaching certificates. Despite the prevalence of formal engineering education departments, there is still confusion about what engineering education is, the jobs that are available for engineering education graduates, and ways to reward faculty who conduct research outside of formal departments. Dr. Cox will present insight about current engineering education research efforts across the U.S. and about trends in graduate engineering education. Informed from a five-year study exploring the preparation of engineering graduate students for careers in academia and industry, this talk will offer practical suggestions about ways that students can demonstrate breadth and depth as future engineering leaders.

Bio: Monica F. Cox, Ph.D., is a Professor and Inaugural Chair of the Department of Engineering Education at The Ohio State University. She is also the Director of the International Institute of Engineering Education Assessment (i2e2a) and the CEO of STEMinent LLC, a company that houses educational assessment, Prepared to Be a Pioneer® professional development, and Quirky Time® media offerings. Her research is focused upon the use of mixed methodologies to explore questions in graduate engineering education; to develop and disseminate reliable and valid assessment tools for use across the engineering education continuum; and to conduct empirical studies about issues facing people of color in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Dr. Cox has led and collaborated on multidisciplinary projects totaling over $12 million, and she has authored over 100 publications.
