Introducing in-space manufacturing at UIC

Assistant Professor Azadeh Haghighi recently presented a “New Era of In-Space Manufacturing: When Artificial Intelligence Meets Physics” during the first SparkTalks of 2025.

SparkTalks is UIC’s take on faculty lightning talks and provides an opportunity for faculty, leaders, and others across campus to learn about the research activity happening across UIC. The series is geared toward igniting the thoughts and solutions of influential UIC changemakers to inspire and create a better world and foster collaboration and idea exchange among our faculty.

Haghighi, director of the Smart Manufacturing of the Future Research Group, spoke about how her team is advancing novel manufacturing techniques and computational tools to ensure reliability, repeatability, safety, and structural integrity for in-space manufacturing and assembly during NASA’s space exploration missions to the Moon and Mars.

In 2024, Clinical Associate Professor Yeow Siow, Associate Professor Jeremiah Abiade, and Professor John Finan presented their research at SparkTalks.

Siow presented “Investigating the Effects of Fluency-based Assessment and Grading System on Student Engagement and Motivation” at the Nov. 24, 2024, series.

Abiade presented “Does a Rising Tide Lift All Boats?” at the Nov. 24, 2024, series.

Finan presented “Human In Vitro Modeling of Tramatic Brain Injury” on Feb. 1, 2024, and returned to present it again on April 3, 2024.
